Fishing
Find suitable water, understand local stocks and disturbance, and choose a habitat for the season.
Choose water, not just a spot
Bring a small rod, stand within reach of suitable water and choose the fishing action. Nitya has pond, river, estuary and coastal fishing. Nearby positions along the same named water reach share its stock and disturbance, so moving a few tiles does not necessarily find an untouched population.
Look through the fish catalogue for a species' habitats, seasons and temperature preference. Its table uses relative weights, not a promised catch percentage.
Stocks and disturbance
There are two independent forms of fishing pressure. Stock is the remaining local fish supply. A completed catch consumes real stock; an exhausted area cannot provide another fish until it recovers. Disturbance represents frightened fish and lengthens the next fishing activity.
An accepted cast adds 0.08 disturbance, up to a maximum of 1. Cancelling that cast does not remove the disturbance, although a cancelled job produces no completed catch. Idle presence and rejected actions do not disturb the water.
Baseline capacity is 24 fish, multiplied by the particular habitat's capacity. In neutral conditions a completely depleted stock takes 6 hours to refill. Maximum disturbance fades in 10 minutes. At full disturbance the work delay multiplier is 1 + 2 before the current weather's fish-activity adjustment.
Seasons and weather
Species weights vary independently by habitat and season. A zero weight excludes the fish for that habitat and season. Cold-preferring fish receive a larger relative share as temperature falls; warm-preferring fish lose relative share. This does not guarantee a catch or bypass depleted stocks.
Weather also changes overall bite activity and stock replenishment. Warm rain is generally helpful; severe weather reduces activity. Recovery follows elapsed weather and the seasonal replenishment factors below. Disturbance clears independently.
| Water | Spring | Summer | Autumn | Winter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pond | 1× | 1× | 0.75× | 0.35× |
| River | 1.5× | 1× | 1.2× | 0.3× |
| Estuary | 1.2× | 1.3× | 1.5× | 0.5× |
| Coastal shallows | 0.8× | 1.5× | 1× | 0.4× |
For the current weather multipliers, see Weather & seasons. Fish populations currently use a shared stock for each water habitat rather than separate saved counts for every species. Species selection happens when a catch completes; there is no simulated migration between habitats yet.
Keep a fishing journal
The map's fishing journal records real observations: where and when fish were caught, the season, weather and pressure. These are historical notes, not live fish positions. Sharing maps can share fishing observations without counting the recipient as having personally visited the area.
Use the catch
Fish retain quality, mass and any discovered intrinsic properties. Use a suitable butchering station for fillets; the actual recorded fish yield determines the meat produced, and heads and trimmings keep the remaining mass. Cooking and other recipes are linked from each fish's item page. Fresh fish spoil, so process or use them promptly.
